Dirty Dishes
It is my thankful Wednesday. Today is all about the dishes. For starters, I’m thankful for them–dishes, plates, bowls, silverware, cookware, bakeware, serving utensils, all of it. Where would we be without them? Eating with our fingers and cooking over a fire, maybe. I’m not saying that there aren’t things to eat with our fingers, but not everything, at least not for me. I like to be able to clean my fingers soon after eating something messy. It is just the way I am.
There are also disposable dishes, bowls, etc. They have a place and I am thankful for them. I do prefer the real stuff that can be washed though. I’m not sure if one has a lesser environmental impact or not, I like to think that ceramic that needs to be washed is better for the environment as a whole.
Many people don’t like to wash dishes. It may not be my most favorite thing to do, but it isn’t usually the worst. When I am not in a rush, or the dishes aren’t completely gross, I find it enjoyable. For one thing, washing the dishes takes something that is unusable and makes it usable again. Another thing for me is when I clean the dishes it is a very tactile experience for me. I wash the dishes with a sponge or cloth and then touch the dishes looking for things I might have missed. I love the way the dishes feel when they are still soapy and clean. This can be almost meditative for me. Or, I have music playing and I can sing and move along with the beat. Recently I have started watching movies that I have seen before on my phone while I do the dishes. These things help the time pass in a friendly way.
I prefer to wash the dishes than to put the dry dishes away. I am thankful that Gideon usually does that chore. Last night, Gideon tested positive for covid. I am not thankful for that. Keziah and I still are testing negative. I am thankful that so far, Gideon and Zed’s symptoms have been fairly mild.
The best part about clean dishes is that it is the perfect place to put yummy food.
